Due to the continued spread of the COVID-19 virus and the public health recommendations that come with it, Arizona State University will be celebrating with its graduates in the 2020 Spring commencement in a virtual, online ceremony. The format may be different, but our enthusiasm for celebration has never been more inspired and we encourage you to join us in honoring ASU graduate and undergraduate students the week of May 11. Commencement and Convocation

All college convocations,  all special interest convocation events and both University Commencement events require an RSVP for participation. Please contact the dean's office of your college to ask about the RSVP policy for your college convocation event. For information about special interest convocations, please contact the University Ceremonies Office.

University Commencement for Undergraduate Students will be held Monday, May 11, 7:30 pm on Frank Kush Field in Sun Devil Stadium

Attending University Undergraduate Commencement May 2020:  Undergraduate candidates will be seated with their college.  Volunteers will be on hand to assist you in finding your seat.  Plan to arrive no later than 7:15 pm to be seated with graduates from your college. Seats not filled by 7:15 pm will be released to the general public. 

PLEASE NOTE: Only working staff, graduating students and authorized guests are allowed on the field or near the stage. Unauthorized individuals will be escorted out of these areas to maintain the safety and security of the event.

Tickets are NOT required for University Undergraduate Commencement. 

Tickets will be required for other ceremonies. To view the ceremony schedule and to confirm which events require tickets please visit the Spring 2020 ceremony page. Graduates must apply and pay their graduations fees in order to have the RSVP link for graduation ceremonies placed on your My ASU page. Tickets are required for some graduation events. This information will appear in more detail on the RSVP page.

Summer 2020 Graduates:  Undergraduate degree candidates who completed degree requirements in August of 2020 are eligible participate in December ceremonies.  Candidates must apply for graduation as a summer graduate and pay your fees in order to have the RSVP link appear on your My ASU page.  This will allow you to RSVP for fall ceremonies. Your name will appear with the listing of students who completed degree requirements in August 2020 in the December 2020 Commencement program.

Honors Designations

If you are eligible for honor cords, you can request that honor cords be mailed to you directly. Please direct your request to

ASU Online students who are eligible for honor cords will receive the appropriate honor cords in the mail starting in early April. No further action is required since cords are automatically processed by the ASU Online graduation team. ASU Online students do not need to request cords from the Registrar’s Office.

Summa Cum Laude = Maroon and Gold, 3.80 to 4.00 GPA
Magna Cum Laude = Gold, 3.60 to 3.79 GPA
Cum Laude = Maroon, 3.40 to 3.59 GPA

Academic recognition is granted to undergraduate candidates only. Students must complete 56 or more hours of in-resident work at ASU's Tempe, West, Polytechnic, Downtown Phoenix and Online campuses, in addition to having the appropriate grade point average. 

These students will be awarded honor cords to be worn during the commencement ceremony.  Your current GPA as verified at the time you request your honor cords will determine which cords you are given. Your diploma and transcripts will reflect the appropriate recognition based on all course work completed at ASU, including courses completed in your final semester.
