University Commencement

Doctoral, Master's and J.D. Candidates

Post-GraduateCommencement and Convocation

Most college convocations and all special interest convocation events require an RSVP for participation. Please contact the dean's office of your college to ask about the RSVP policy for your college convocation event. For information about special interest convocation activities, please contact the University Ceremonies Office.

Doctoral Candidates

All doctoral candidates and graduate advisors will wear proper academic regalia to convocation. Please carry your hood over your arm. It should not be worn before your degree is conferred. Please invite your graduate advisor to participate in the hooding ceremony. If your advisor cannot attend the ceremony, please invite an appropriate substitute from the faculty. Your graduate advisor or substitute will be seated next to you. At the designated time, you will hand your hood to your advisor who will then place the hood over your head. As your name is called, you will proceed across the platform.

In order to reserve your seat for the ceremony, and that of your advisor, you must submit your RSVP through your My ASU page.  Click on the link under the Graduation tab to indicate your participation at University Commencement as well as to submit information for your hooder.

Master's and Juris Doctor Candidates

Candidates will wear proper academic regalia including your hood at commencement. At the appropriate time all candidates will stand and the appropriate degree will be conferred. Student seats located in the lower bowl of the arena that are not filled 15 minutes prior to the ceremony will be released to the general public. Late arrivals will be seated in any remaining available student seats at an appropriate time during the ceremony.
