Spring 2009 Commencement
With the participation of President Barack Obama at ASU’s Spring 2009 Commencement, the ceremony will be held at Sun Devil Stadium to accommodate the large audience. Parking will be available around the stadium and across the campus, but light rail and public transit are highly recommended transportation options.
Light Rail
Light rail use is strongly encouraged. The METRO light rail park-and-ride lots are conveniently located and will eliminate the need to find an open parking space close to the stadium the day of commencement. Updated: a light rail rider alert has been released.
If you are arriving by light rail and your commencement ticket is marked “North Gate,” you should exit light rail at the Rural Road stop for the shortest path to the North and Northeast gates of the stadium. The Mill Avenue stop may seem closer, but the walk from the Mill Avenue station and around the stadium measures longer than the walk from the Rural Road stop.
Public Transportation
The use of public transportation is also strongly encouraged. Visit http://www.valleymetro.org or http://uabf.asu.edu/parking_commuter for neighborhood shuttles and Valley Metro public transportation options and directions on how to arrive at Sun Devil Stadium.
Parking
Click on the map image for a larger PDF of the commencement day parking map. Free parking is available in lots around the stadium and in most parking areas on campus the day of commencement and convocations. Parking will be restricted in residence halls and locations where special permits are required. Regular fees will be collected at meters and visitor lots. Disabled parking and a drop-off site for elderly guests will be available. You can view all ASU parking maps here. The most up-to-date commencement day parking information will be posted on the ASU Parking and Transportation University Commencement & Graduation site. To find other areas to park in the Tempe area, please visit the Tempe.gov parking page.
Please note: Be sure to review this important information regarding traffic delays and road closures in Tempe.
ASU Permit Holders
All permit holders who normally park in the north campus lots, such as Lots 58, 59, 59N and 59E, as well as the Stadium and Packard Drive South structures must park in facilities south of University Drive on Wednesday. Due to the size of the event, students, faculty and staff who park in these northern areas may enjoy a free pass to park in locations closer to the core of campus such as the Tyler Street, Rural Road, Tenth Street and Apache Boulevard structures. Additional surface lot parking will be open in ASU Gammage Lot 3 and in Lot 16.
Permit holders should not park in visitor lots, visitor sections of parking structures or meters, as these will remain as short-term pay parking areas as usual. Everyone who parks in these areas is required to pay the appropriate exit and lot fee.
Spring 2009 Convocations
Parking
Free parking is available in lots around the campus venues and in most parking areas on campuses the day of convocations. Parking will be restricted in residence halls and locations where special permits are required. Regular fees will be collected at meters and visitor lots. Disabled parking and a drop-off site for elderly guests will be available. You can view all ASU parking maps here. The most up-to-date commencement day parking information will be posted on the ASU Parking for Convocations site.
Please note: Be sure to review this important information regarding traffic delays and road closures in Tempe.
Disabled Parking
Disabled parking is available at convocation venues. A disabled placard or license plate is required to park in these areas. For more information about disabled parking, please contact ASU Parking and Transportation Services online or at 480-965-6407. For more information about disabled parking for the West campus convocation, please call 602-543-5311.

After the Ceremony
Be advised: Multiple convocation ceremonies will take place May 14-May 16 on all four campuses. If you attend a convocation ceremony on the Tempe campus and plan to enjoy campus or to visit the surrounding area afterward, please move your car to a location outside of Lot 59 (Wells Fargo Arena) or Lot 3 (ASU Gammage Auditorium). This will allow other families and friends attending other events at these locations to find convenient parking.
